The Complaints by Ian Rankin

A great new Ian Rankin novel without Rebus. A most satisfying read. The story crosses the boundaries of who you can and cant trust. Tapping into the modern culture of greed. I do miss the musical references of the Rebus series but the new character Fox has his own foibles. The story weaves but never seem to loose pace.

The story revolves around the Police that investigate the Polis.

Looking froward to the next Rankin novel

Scandinavian Crime Fiction

Rejseholdet

Having watched Unit One (Rejseholdet in Danish see image in post), the Eagle a Crime Odyssey and now The Killing (currently showing on SBS TV in Australia) I have become somewhat entranced by Scandinavian crime stories. Perhaps this is a reflection of my Norwegian heritage. The TV shows offer a refreshing and different approach in their story lines. A for cry from the crime by numbers and a car chase US shows. Perhaps closed in style to the English shows such as Cracker and Wire In The Blood. It is great to see that the cultural imperialism is being challenged on SBS TV at least.

This has in turn put me on the path of  Scandinavian authors. The first author I have read  is the Norwegian Jo Nesbø, his hero the rather flawed Inspector Harry Hole.  The next auther that I have encountered is Asa Larsson I am looking forward to this as it is based in Sweden. Already Henning Mankell with his Wallander series has made a this Swedish authors stories well known in print and and on TV.

No Country for Old Men

I have just finished reading this rather engaging novel on which the film of the same name is based. I hoe to read more by the same author. I have reviewed the book which can be seen in the adjoing side bar.

Book Reviews

I have added a nice little feature which is seen in one of the side bars on the right hand side of the web page. I can now add the books I am , going to and have read recently. The plugin picks up the book cover and other detail by linking to  amazon.com . I haven’t set up a referral system which I can and get discounts based on people who buy after coming here. Given the low traffic of this site its probably not going to matter. The plugin was written by Rob over at Roblog.

I did look at another similar plugin in based in an open source library net work, but try as I might I couldn’t get it to work. By contrast this worked relatively easily.

Any way if you dare you can look at what I read.  I kicked off with Silesian Station which is  a crime novel set in Pre WWII Germany.
