Upgrade to WordPress 3.1

Looks like the upgrade has gone without a hitch. The mobile theme works anchors a weigh!

UPDATE

I have now messed around with WP 3.1 and so for so good. I can however report that the site is a little messed up in Chrome 10 beta. What i mean is that when scriolling up and down the images or content dont always scroll smoothly. I have noticed this on my laptop mostly (which is a new machine) . However this is not a problem in Safari or IE9 RC. This is most likely a function of Chrome rather than WordPress. I am bit addicted to Chrome as I was to Firefox when it first appeared, so I am always using the beta versions with the risks that associated with beta releases.

All my plugins are happy but I cant really say that I have pushed all the new features yet. I would like to the media gallery upgraded as I find it a bit clunky. I am no html wizard so I guess that I will wait for the forthcoming releases.

The other issue I have had is with video uploaded from the WordPress app on my iPhone. Here Chrome and Safari shine but not Internet Explore 7 or 9RC. The video sample is here I have used the new internal linking feature of WordPress here.

Video up load

Another attempt to upload video to the blog from my iPhone using the WordPress app version 2.6.5

Test of Blackbird Pie for WordPress

Here is a test of embedding a Tweet in a blog post  using the blackbirdpie plugin for WordPress A little quirky in its implementation but that might just be me making it more complicated that it needs to be  [blackbirdpie id=”2577297706057728″]

So embedding tweets is not that hard , I think

WordPress iPhone App v2.6

Been having lots of trouble with the WordPress App since I upgraded to iOS 4. Couldn’t log in to the blog very frustrating. Anyway this all seems to be in the past now with the release of this version of the App.
You are supposed to be able to add video from an iPhone 4. I have tried direct filming from within the application and loading from the library. Both methods make the App crash.

I did manage to load a photo.

Added a WP Touch Mobile Icon

Well managed to create an icon from a photo using a website called Flavor Studios the website does all the work. When done simply download the icons to your computer and then upload to the admin page. Here it is for those without an iPhone.

WPtouch adds a mobile theme as well!

Well another plugin added to the blog site. One day I might a real uses for this other than fiddling with it. I have an iPhone but don’t like the way the blog displays in a mobile environment. Enter WPtouch 1.9.16 this free plugin sits along the

regular theme. This allows a seamless transition and does not affect the regular theme. WPtouch  has a plethora options to fiddle with however it worked straight out of the box. The WPtouch theme looks great on the iPhone . The next thing is a custom icon which I will have to design.

You have to love opensource

WordPress
Image via Wikipedia

I have been using a plugin called Now Reading. It keeps track of the books a read and displays them on the blog site in a sidebar. It also helps me keep track of what I am reading and write some reviews. It also  maintains a library  for me.

The Rob Miller who originally developed the plugin stopped at around WordPress version 2.7 and subsequently it stopped working.  He is appearently  too busy to keep on with the development and changes t0 WordPress. I would have liked to update the plug-in myself.  However when I look at code I don’t see poetry its more like random swirls.

Anyway as is the world of Word Press someone else has taken up the baton and is now running with it. Now I can again add books and they display nicely on my site. Thanks to Ben Gunnink for Now Reading Reloaded.  The really amazing thing for me was I downloaded  Now Reading Reloaded  , deactivated the old one activated the new one and voila all my data was there .

Three Cheers for open source. This I guess would never have happened if this was  a commercial plugin.

New Ideas for WordPress

I posted the text below on the WordPress site under new ideas or suggestion for inclusion in new versions of WordPress.

I would like to see a feature that would allow the complete removal of unwanted or unused plugins. I for one trial many plugins on my blog and I don’t always have easy ftp access so removing the plugin directories whilst relatively easy can be a chore.

The new install plugin feature is great and being able to add new plugins on the fly is very easy. The same concept applied to removing plugins would be equally useful.

If I knew how to program I would write a plugin to do this. That’s my first idea for WordPress.

Plugin Management on WordPress 2.7

I must say that one  of the features that I really enjoy about WordPress 2.7 is the plugin management. Being able to add plugins on the fly without ftp access is fabulous. I don’t always access my blogs in an environment where I can use ftp easily so being able to add a new plugin whenever I like is great.

Also being something of an upgrade junkie I am also liking the automatic upgrade feature. I had used a plugin for this in the past but now that it is part of the core of WordPress more the better I say.

If I was looking for an improvement on this side of the operation it would be an easy way to remove unwanted or redundant plugins but this is less pressing.

This only one small innovation in what has been the most pleasing revision of WordPress so far.
