Pelicans Observing Me – Scary

Pelicans Observing me

Originally uploaded by exrorro

I saw this photo on flickr. It is great I have never seen a pelican up so close; let alone two at such close quarters. I had a close encounter with a largely tame Pelican in Mykonos last year and now wish I had taken some up close and personal pics like this. They remind me of the alien birds in the old Warner Brothers cartoons from the 1950’s. Just great. I guess its just a matter of being in the right place at eh right time. Any way if you click on the photo it will take you to flickr.com and the profile of the photographer.

Auckland Harbour

DSC_0146

On a recent trip to New Zealand I had the good fortune to have a sail on Auckland harbour.  The place we were staying offered  a cruise on the harbour. We were taken out on a 34 foot sailing boat.  On our return into the harbour we were confronted with one of the old Americas cup yachts. These yachts are available as cruises on the the harbour. There can be up to 30 people on them , standing room only. You can see the crowds on the deck! However under spinnaker it did make a great sight and a perfect end to my first ever sailing experience.

Where are the Sheep

Sheep

Travelling in New Zealand over the last week or so I have been struck by the lack of SHEEP. This is my first visit here and I have grown up in Australia with a steady diet of NZ sheep jokes. The jokes might more aptly be applied to Kiwis and cows which seem to greatly outnumber the sheep. So where are they? Where have all the sheep gone? Have they like many Kiwis headed to Australia???

Its Christmas Eve and I am in New Zealand

Arrived in Auckland today and encountered something that we don’t see too much of in South Australia ……RAIN. After 12 days of stuffing oursleves to the gills on the Diamond Princess on a 12 day cruise from Sydney we are back on land and having a couple of relaxing days in Auckland before we head off on motoring holiday on the north island. Might even pick up an accent 🙂 .

Will add some pics of NZ later.

A tale from a parallel universe

I subscribe to a wonderful blog called stusshed. Stu laments the passing of the Triton Woodworking groups in Victoria. Triton of course are the makers of a range of tools which are resplendent in their orange livery. User groups, or groups of users,  can be great things and I suppose the woodworking user groups are a sort of men’s group that does not involve the “inner child” or hugging trees. There is of course nothing better than the sight of saw dust on the floor and the sound of electrons being murdered.

This sad tale of the Triton users groups reminds me of another similar experience that I had. Remember the old computer user groups in the days when there were several computer operating systems in the market place. Windows was only a dream. I belonged to an Atari user group , they had a GUI long before Microsoft. It was a bid nerdy but 512 kilobytes of ram was something to behold. However  with the arrival of the 2400 baud modem and bulletin boards things began to change. The once flourishing Atari User group drifted away as we all became seduced by Microsoft.

So once upon a time in a small hall far far away………………………………..

This is why Medicine needs to be regulated

Doctor ‘harvested’ insured patients to rort public fundsYet another story of alleged mismangement by a member of the medical profession. This is a good example of the power that medicos wield within the health care sytem. Heaven help anyone individual who tries to stop them.
Who is going to challenge the head of surgery in a trauma centre? Good to see that such people are being brought to task. Ultimately it is patients who suffer putting too much trust in medicos. That said there are many doctors who ply their trade with patients in mind. It has not stopped health becoming a hugh business.

Teens charged over flamingo bashing – ABC News Australian Broadcasting Corporation

This really takes the biscuit! Assaulting a blind Flamingo in a Zoo the offenders all around 18 years old will no doubt have their names withheld. They are described as “Two 17-year-old boys, an 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old man have been charged.” the 17 y.o. boys will be shielded from the  public because of their age. It would be hard to imagine that they were not fully aware if what they were doing.

I suppose the stupidity and callousness of people never ceases to amaze me
